The name was changed to "Red Creek" around 1836. Local lore explains the origin of the name Red Creek. At one time, a tannery occupied the spot on the North side of the falls. As part of the tanning process, dye was used to tan skins. Dye was disposed of in the creek flowing from the falls, coloring it red. A portion of the tannery's foundation can still be seen in the spot where the Pit Stop currently sits. The village was incorporated in 1852. In 1874 most of the business district was consumed by fire.
